Experience the Legacy of France's First AOC

Chateau Fortia, nestled in the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, is one of the oldest wineries in the region, surrounded by 32 hectares of lush vineyards. This historic estate played a pivotal role in establishing France's first Appellation Contrôlée system, thanks to the efforts of Baron Pierre Le Roy de Boiseaumarie. Today, the winery is managed by Sandra Rochel and Anna Olejnik, who are dedicated to preserving its rich traditions and heritage.

A Rich History from the 17th Century to Today

The origins of Chateau Fortia date back to the 1800s when it began as a small farm. In the 18th century, Hercule Paul de Fortia acquired the estate, and his son, Paul Antonie de Fortia, expanded its vineyards. The winery flourished in the 19th century under the stewardship of the Seguin and Gondi families, producing exceptional wines. In 1890, Hippolyte Bernard Le Saint, a former director of the Official Journal of the Kingdom of Egypt, purchased and renovated the chateau. His daughter Edmée and son-in-law Pierre Le Roy later gained international acclaim for the winery. After several generations, Pierre's grandson Bruno Le Roy managed the estate until 2003, followed by his daughter and her husband, Pierre Pastre. In 2016, Pastre retired, entrusting the winery to Sandra and Anna.

Wines Reflecting Unique Terroirs

Chateau Fortia spans 36 hectares, with 32 hectares dedicated to grape cultivation. The vineyards, located on south-facing slopes, benefit from optimal sunlight and a favorable climate. The estate primarily focuses on Syrah, complemented by Grenache, Mourvèdre, Roussanne, and Clairette. This diverse selection allows for the creation of wines that truly express the unique terroirs of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

A beautiful afternoon including cellar tour, tasting and walk through the vines. The wine is superb and the explanations of the wine making methods and traditions were excellent (in English). Thoroughly recommend a visit and of course taking home some exceptional wines. Merci et meilleurs vœux.

I am so glad I purchased the wine at Chateau Fortia Sari, this was the first two wineries we visited. After the testing I was confident this was the wine I wanted to purchase. While the next winery was good the wine at Chateau Fortia Sari was head and shoulders above the 2nd winery. Our host was very helpful in explaining the difference between this various wines available. Frank & Chris Ward
