Veneto wine region is located in the northeast of Italy. It stretches from the Dolomites to the Adriatic Sea and comprises a wide low mountain range and a lowland crossed by rivers, canals, and the Po Delta. The region has borders with Emilia-Romagna to the south, Lombardy to the west, Trentino-Alto Adige to the northwest, Austria to the north and Friuli Venezia Giulia to the northeast. The capital of Veneto, Venice, attracts millions every year - either to the carnival, to the Biennale, to the film festival or simply on the Canale Grande to cruise with a boat. The attractiveness of Venice puts under its shadow other no-less attractive places outside the lagoon city. Veneto's cities and towns are full of fairytale palaces, sublime cathedrals, and charming waterways. Further, Venetian wines resulting from the variety of grapes grown here are unique.
Vineyards in the Veneto wine region can be found on the shores of Lake Garda as well as near the lagoon of Venice, at the foot of the Dolomites, and in the hills of Mantua. The variety of the cultivated grapes is unique: it ranges from autochthonous white vines such as the Prosecco or Garganega grape to Chardonnay and Pinot Grigio to the distinct red varieties Corvina and Raboso and to Cabernet and Merlot. With such well-known Venetian wines as Amarone, Valpolicella, Soave and Prosecco, Veneto is one of the most important wine-growing regions in Italy. You will find a range of activities here!
Veneto wine region is responsible for 8 million hectoliters of wine each year. Around one-third of these are DOC or DOCG wines - so wines with a registered designation of origin. So, 28 DOC and 14 DOCG consortia in all parts of the Veneto ensure that the quality remains constant and the typicity is preserved.
Due to the diverse soil conditions in Veneto wine region, the most diverse varieties of grapes are cultivated. which also results in the diversity of Venetian wines produced here.
The dominant grape variety in the Veneto wine region is the high-yielding white Garganega, which is the main grape for the production of Soave and Gambellara wines. These are one of the most popular wines of Veneto wine region. Gambellara can produce fragrant white wines with a fine lemon and almond flavor. Soave is one of the best-known white wine of Veneto wine region and even of Italy.
Soave must be at least 70% from the Garganega grape pressed and stored for at least eight months if he wants to get the coveted designation "Classico".
The indigenous red grape varieties Corvina and Rondinella have a long tradition and they are the basis for the famous Amarone, Valpolicella and Bardolino. A good Valpolicella is a ruby red in youth, then garnet red, he has a powerful body and is velvety-harmonious.
The famous red wine of Veneto wine region is Amarone. The dense, rich, and often expensive wine is made from air-dried, resinated grapes. The Amarone is also available in a sweet version under the name Recioto.
On the right bank of Lake Garda thrives on moraine hills with gravel and sand, where they produce Bardolino wines.
Prosecco is a famous wine from Veneto wine region, and it is the pride of the locals. Most of these white Venetian wines come as frizzante (sparkling) or spumante (foaming) on the market, and from "Amabile" (sweet) to "secco" (dry) it is to be found in all variants. Prosecco refers to a denomination of origin and is made from the Glera grape variety.
If you are travelling in the Veneto wine region and want to visit places other than Venice and or want to get away in nature, then you will discover some culturally significant cities and the tourist pass natural places of the region.
Vicenza is the fourth largest city in the Veneto wine region, with 115,550 inhabitants. Nevertheless, the capital of the homonymous region is one of the culturally richest cities in Italy. Vicenza together with 24 Palladian Villas of Veneto belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1994. The significance of these villas is in architecture, which is an outcome of a detailed study of classical Roman architecture by Andrea Palladio. Therefore, Vicenza is also called Palladian city.
Not only immense architectural gems such as villas and palaces from the 16th century are open to visitors in the old town to visit. There are also more than 1,000 goldsmiths in Vicenza who make jewellery and gild the lives of tourists with their creations. Three times a year there is a world-renowned jewellery exhibition – the Vicenza Oro. But also modernity shows itself in Vicenza by means of industry and high-rise buildings. It is best to visit the place and get a picture of the varied Vicenza.
Even if the story of Romeo and Juliet of Shakespeare's tragedy immediately comes to mind if you think of Verona, it's not just a destination for romanticism: Active vacationers, as well as art and culture enthusiasts, will find what they are looking for in the northern Italian city and its surroundings. The most famous building in Verona dates back to Roman times and is the perfect starting point for a tour of the city: The Arena di Verona is a Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century. Due to the uniquely beautiful acoustics in the arena, the venue has quickly established itself as a venue for operas, concerts, and other performances.
Further, Scaliger Castelvecchio is now one of the most interesting attractions in the city. The Castle of the Lords of Verona was built between 1354 and 1356 under Cangrande II Della Scala. Visit the museum of Castelvecchio, which was reconstructed by a famous architect, Carlo Scarpa between 1959 and 1973. That's why it is a real gem for architecture lovers.
Piazza Delle Erbe is the heart of Verona; life pulsates here, Market stalls open every day, and charming wine bars and cafés invite you to linger awhile. Just sit down and admire the piazza with its surrounding numerous historic buildings. How about ending a day full of experiences with an Apéritif here?
Since Venice is probably the must-do of every guide for Veneto, so here hot advice for the little sister of Venice. Colourful houses, magical lanes and picturesque canals - all this and more awaits you in Chioggia. The small fishing town in the Veneto region enchants with a special charm and reminds at the first glance of Venice. This is no coincidence because Chioggia is located at the southern end of the popular lagoon city and is often referred to as "Little Venice".
As in Venice, there are many romantic bridges, narrow canals, and cute little cafes. The big difference is that there are hardly any tourists here, which makes a discovery tour much more pleasant. Stroll along the Corso del Popolo, visit the fish market in the Pescheria and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere - Chioggia is sure to captivate you!
Beautiful mountain landscapes with a wide network of well-developed hiking trails, adventurous climbing trails, and nice wine roads to walk along - in Veneto wine region you will find a great mix of pure nature and all kinds of sports.
About thirty kilometers northeast of Bardolino begins the diverse natural landscape of the Parco Della Lessinia, which not only holds forests and meadows. When hiking through the Parco Della Lessinia, travelers will come across quaint hamlets, where a break with a glass of wine and a typical Venetian meal will give you strength. Small nature bridges help to overcome the rivers within the park. If you are in the Parco Della Lessinia, you should also visit the village of Molina. After visiting the "Molin de Lorenzo", an old restored mill, the path to the "Parco Cascate Molina" is not far. Hikers will find peace and relaxation in the middle of wild waterfalls.
Along the shore, Veneto's nature reveals itself in a special way. Here travelers will find numerous small towns and villages such as Ponte Sul Mincio and Borghetto di Valeggio - partly embedded in a picturesque vineyard landscape.
In connection with the Minicio is also the "Strada del Vino Bardolino". It starts in the eponymous town of Bardolino, passes over the hills of Monte Baldo and finally ends in Bussolengo. A relaxing day trip on the "Strada del Vino Bardolino" promises the approximately twelve-kilometer stretch between Peschiera del Garda and Vallegio Sul Mincio. Along the way, numerous wineries offer tastings of the classics Bardolino and Chiaretto.
With homemade Tortellini from Vallegio sul Minco, accompanied by a classic Venetian wine and trout from Borghetto di Vallegio, the region around the river also has much to offer discerning gourmets.
The Monte Baldo is a ridge of the Garda Mountains of about 30 kilometers in length. It is located on the western shore of Lake Garda near the village of Malcesine. Flora and fauna of the Monte Baldo exhibit a large species richness. For this reason, he was already titled in the 16th century as the "Garden of Italy". Some plants were discovered for the first time on Monte Baldo.
From the village of Malcesine since 1962, a cable car goes up to the mountain station of Monte Baldo. So hikers can explore the variety of trails on the mountain massif with its natural parks. The paths have different levels of difficulty. So there are easy ways that invite to walks. But also trekking tours are possible. In addition, mountain bikers will find a little paradise on Monte Baldo.

Veneto wine region is a gourmet paradise and the birthplace of simple and surprisingly delicious dishes. The national cuisine is based on seafood, delicious meats, and seasonal vegetables; it represents very simple and healthy food.
While in the old day's spices were often used more in the rest of Europe for food preservation than for their flavor changes, Venetian cuisine adopted some of the spices of international cuisines and created new dishes such as the Sarde in saor, that represents the balance between sweet, sour and salty. Unlike the more southern regions of Italy, pasta is less common in favor of polenta and risotto.
A typical regional delicacy of Veneto wine region is carpaccio, thin slices of raw meat seasoned with lemon juice and olive oil.
The story of this dish is very interesting: The first time it was cooked in the Jerez Bar in Venice. One of the bar's most loyal customers was ill and doctors advised him to eat raw meat. The head chef of the bar, Giuseppe Cipriani, invented a simple and quick dish for the customer. He cut thin beef and sprinkled slices with mayonnaise. The new dish was named after the Venetian painter Vittore Carpaccio, who was known for the characteristic red and white tones of his work.
Rice plays a central role in the gastronomy of Veneto wine region. Even today, in the Verona area, the interesting rice variety Vialone nano is produced, which is protected by the DOP (denominazione di origine protetta) trademark.
Above all, the Risotto all' Amarone is one of the most popular and typical dishes of the Veronese kitchen, a showpiece of many well-known restaurants in the city. In this classic recipe, three excellent products from the region meet each other: the wine Amarone Della Valpolicella, the cheese Monte Veronese, and the rice Vialone Nano. The latter is medium-grain rice, which is very well suited for the preparation of risotto.
Wine pair: You can pair it with the remaining Amarone or with a lighter Valpolicella wine!
Sarde in Saòr is an indispensable part of the Cicheti, the small aperitif appetizers that are offered in every down-to-earth Osteria in Veneto wine region. The Saòr, a marinade of oil, vinegar, and herbs, goes back to the maritime tradition of Veneto. The Saòr made fish durable and therefore ensured the supply of the sailors with egg white and vitamins. In fact, Venetian sailors never suffered from scurvy. Of course, preserving food is no longer a secret today, but the Saòr is still a great marinade for fish, vegetables, and meat.
